The Best Companion

We’re asking support, InshaAllah, from — it is said, Rijalullah, men of Allah — from the men of Allah, from the God-knowers, from the friends of Allah, from the Awliya Kiram, we need support. Without their support, we can do nothing. Without the support of Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, the companions couldn’t do anything. Everything came from the heart of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Everything.

They were the recipients. And according to that, as Allah created them and created their hearts, they have taken in, what Allah sent through the heart of His beloved Prophet ﷺ. And they have implemented it. Everything was put into practice. All messages — every message, every detail, that was given to the Prophet ﷺ, was immediately implemented.

It has been sent to put it into practice — not to say later, „Oh, we have a new religion and these are the laws and these are the rules and this is this and this is that.“ No. Every detail, every impulse, every inspiration, every word or silence, every silence, every spoken word, every heart’s movement, every inspiration — everything, what came from the heart of the Prophet, what he received from Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, and passed on, served to put it directly into practice. So our way is to understand, to put it in action.

Therefore, it’s useless, to learn huge books, to master a thousand rules and then not to put it into practice. If you have understood one rule — one rule — for example, and apply it, that is more valuable, then to be able to memorize ten books and not to put them into practice; on the contrary, it leads to even more catastrophes, not to put into practice, what one has learned. It leads to the catastrophe, to be prouder than before. And everything possible, what comes from this memorized, learned, studied book knowledge, is a catastrophe for those who do it — and for what they pass on.

What did the Prophet ﷺ say?

„Addabani Rabbi fa-ahsana ta’dibi.“
(Hadith)

„Allah taught me the best adab.“ Adab — your manners. What are your manners? Our behavior, what we do — what we do, what we believe, what takes place in our hearts. Adab. Adab first towards Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, adab towards the Prophets ﷺ, adab towards your Sheikh, adab towards your brothers and sisters, adab towards all people, adab towards the creation. You as a human in the creation — what is your adab, what is your conduct, how do you behave? How do you behave? What is your deed? This is to be learned, this is what must be learned. Firstly.

Then comes a whole while nothing. And then comes, what you have learned — rules and religion, and din and nasiha, and what you have memorized, from Qur’an and Hadith, and this and that — this comes much later. It is very dangerous, to study and to learn and to say, „I am Muslim and I’m learning Islam and also theology.“

„What are you studying?“

„Yes, I study theology.“

„Oh, tea or coffee?“

„Ah, no, no, no, no. The-o-logie.“

„Ah, so tea.“

„Not just tea. Theology.“

„What kind of theology?“

„Yes, Islamic Theology.“

„Oh. Are you studying Islamic Theology? Allah.“

„Yes, I’m currently working on my PhD.“

„Yes, in what?“

„Yes, in — I have specialized in Sufism.“

„Oh. Sufismus?“

„Yes, yes, Sufitum.“

„Ah. And you’re writing  your PhD on that?“

„Yes, yes, then I’ll become a doctor.”

„Yes, but will you get a doctoral cap too?”

The doctoral cap is square, you know. It’s square, after all. It’s made for a square head. This is a four-corner hat on a four-corner head. Study Sufism … okay. May Allah grant you success and guide you rightly. InshaAllah.

May He allow us to understand Sufism — to learn and understand. And this lies in education, in adab. Adab requires education. Oh human being, you need education. We need education. We need the education of our unrestrained Nafs al-Ammara Bis-Su (ego, or the lower self that commands evil), who is the best friend of Shaytan. And Shaytan is his best friend. But the ego, Nafs al-Ammara Bis-Su, has surpassed Shaytan. First, Shaytan taught the ego something — how to be disobedient and how to follow the Shaytanic rules. In the meantime, he has surpassed Shaytan. Even Shaytan turns red — when he sees what the ego does, even Shaytan turns red with shame. Your worst enemy is not Shaytan — it is the ego. Because ego is your best friend. You are one with him. One. A heart and a soul. „Is everything okay with me? How am I doing?“ That is the only question for him. Therefore, „Addabani Rabbi“. For the Prophet ﷺ it is not needed. He did it for us. He did it, to show it to us. And the companions accepted it. And the companions passed it on.

Then they asked, on the internet, on YouTube: „How important is the companion on the way?  Or how should the companion be? How important is the companion, the brother on the way?“

Yes, he is very important. Choose the best one. Who is the best? Yes, then look at the companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, ideally. Best to look at the original — always. That’s why we study Hadith, isn’t it? Because we want to look at the original, at the human original. To the original of originals, to the foundation of creation, to Sayyidina Rasulullah ﷺ, whose birthday we celebrate. We celebrate it, yes, with fireworks and Dhikr and praises, despite the egos of some people, who don’t approve it. They celebrate only their own birthday. „Happy Birthday to you.“ Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ is the original. And the original companions are his companions — and also those of all the other prophets, of course. But the clearest and the most perfect is the way of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ — and everything is preserved.

Everything is preserved. All the other religions are no longer preserved, they are corrupted. Corrupted by the nafs, by the egos of people; there’s nothing left — scriptures corrupted, rules corrupted, everything corrupted — nothing original. What are you going to hold on to? And Allah has promised: „I preserve the Qur’an.“ It has not been corrupted, no letter. Until today. No letter is different. You do not find two copies of Qur’an, where you can say, „Look here, I have a Qur’an now, but there is something completely different in it.“ It doesn’t exist. You will not show me a single letter, not a single sign, that differs from any other edition of the Holy Qur’an.

Likewise, the Hadith, the statements of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which are precisely classified by the God-knowers and by the ulama — whom we honour. Of course we honour them. We are under their feet. And they have categorized them — Millions of Hadiths, Millions of statements. There is an exact instruction for everything … or one can say it the other way around, there is nothing in this life, in human life, where you can say: „Yes, but this point in life, this situation and this problem, you won’t find it in Islam, you won’t find it with the Prophet ﷺ, you do not find them among the companions.“ Yes, yes, yes! You will find it. You will find it. There isn’t a single thing that you won’t find.

It’s perfect! When Allah says, „I will perfect it“… Allah himself says that he will perfect it. Anyone else? Does anyone else want to say something about it? If Allah says: „I perfect it. I have now perfected My favour towards humanity.“ What do you want? This is not going to work — without Allah and without the Prophet ﷺ. That will only be what is now — murder and killing. Murder and killing. Ignorance, hypocrisy, and murder and killing everywhere in the world. We only see fraud and lies. You see nothing else anymore out there in the world, 99% nothing else. Nothing else.

May Allah protect us, InshaAllah. And protect our path. Follow the path of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, in the best way possible. And if you are looking for a companion, then seek a companion … Who was the best companion? In the eyes of the companions, and the eyes of the sahabas, the Prophet ﷺ was the best companion, or? He was their teacher. Then there were Abu Bakr As-Siddiq and Sayyidina Ali, and then many, many others — 124,000 companions.

Therefore, first of all you have to look for a teacher. Follow the model of the companions — they had a teacher. It still exists today. It hasn’t changed. The model, and the Sunnah of Allah, which He has given us, has given to people, has not changed — and will not change. You will always have someone who leads, and who is the bearer of news. In our time, he is a Sheikh, a Murshid. And he has the same function as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He has the same function — not the same rank, don’t misunderstand me — not the same rank. The highest rank is held by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. And after that, his companions — the Ashabi l-Kiram — have the highest rank. The function of learning and becoming, and of living and dying, and of education. and of the path is the same. It is the same and is still guided by the Prophet ﷺ.

May Allah protect us, InshaAllah, from such bad, foolish opinions, that spread among the Muslims. And from ignorance — may Allah keep it  away from us. May He open our hearts more and more, especially in this holy month — a month in which it pleased Allah, to send the light of His beloved Prophet, His Nur-Muhammadi, into the world. Isn’t that a reason to celebrate?

May Allah protect us, InshaAllah.

Wa min-Allahi at-taufiq, bi hurmati

Al-Fatiha.
